Belas Shopping Kid Zone Day

Today we had a play group field trip to Belas Shopping (our mall) to the Kid Zone. Owen was very reluctant to leave the house, get on the bus, everything. But once he saw our destination, he was ecstatic! He rode the bumpy slides about 20 times!

Riley was a little small for some of the things but was able to do lots! One thing she found much self-accomplishment in was sneaking up the stairs of the big jungle gym. She was thrilled as she stuck her arm threw the net and waved! (And I got a shot of my cutie-pa-tootie!)

Before we left for the day I forced the kids to take a picture with me. Riley sort of looks like a pirate and Owen is just annoyed we are taking yet another picture. Oh well! I think it still turned out great!

Growing Artists

Growing artists is no easy task. It's important to keep the balance between letting the artists have free reign and keeping our white leather chairs... Well white leather chairs.

Recently Owen has begun giving life to his drawings. He's enjoying drawing monsters!

Riley LOVES drawing!! She can easily draw for hours. Her number 1 request is for me to draw monkeys. Second to that is stars. It's really cute!

One of the cartoon channels here plays a lot of Pink Panther and The Ant & The Ardvark. Owen asked me to draw them. And then he volunteered a body part I did not draw. "And a weenie Mom!" So here you go. A blue Ardvark with a green weenie.

LIS Tour, Kero shopping and pictures!

Owen and I checked the Luanda International School yesterday and got him registered. Nathan stayed home with Riley and Nazi (Na-ZEE), our maid. Yep, we have a maid. She comes twice a week and doesn't speak a lick of English. It's been tricky communicating with her since I don't speak a lick of Portuguese. I am not allowed to drive (nor do I want to try here!), so our driver Aires picked us up. He hadn't been to LIS before so we ended up passing the street and making a loop to get there. There are so many one way streets that you never go the same route anywhere.
LIS looks amazing! We've heard so many people tell us they wished they could take the school with them when there were transferred. I can see why after seeing the school. The different grades are divided into building pods. The courtyard areas are filled with jungle gyms, basketball nets, and tons of other activities. The areas have huge canopies providing tons of shade. Backpacks are all hung outside on hooks. Very where you walk on campus is covered in shade from all the trees. There is a huge basketball court, futbol field and swimming pool. The kids all have assigned swim days. Super fun!
All the teachers live on the campus. The teachers' grounds separate the older levels from the preprimary kids, 3-4 year olds. Their area has a special entrance. They have beautiful gardens providing a great space for the kids to do outside exploring. They have lots of bikes and trikes, jungle gym equipment, a rope climbing wall (not very high), and loads more outside activities. Inside is just as great. There are 3 classrooms with reading nooks, music areas, blocks, Legos, a great corner learning about jungle animals and building a tree on a post, and all sorts of other fun. "All the messy activities" as the teacher said are in the shared area. Painting, play dough and clay, water table, dirt table, etc. Needless to say Owen threw a bit of a fit when it was time to leave! I was able to bribe him with chocolate teddy bears.
Here are the pictures I was able to take. I couldn't take any of the students, so I didn't get a bunch. But these give you a good idea.

The top 2 pictures of the bug jungle gyms are in the primary 1-3 areas. Bottom pictures are in the 4-year old class rooms.

This collage is all in the 4-year old class rooms. See Owen checking out the blocks and toys?
This palm-looking plant is incredibly massive! It's on the grounds of LIS. The street lamp gives you scale. Nuts huh?

After the school tour we headed to Kero, one of the large supermarkets. (Note: Nathan had to go to Casa dos Frescos, another market by our house, when I got home. Completely typical not to be able to get all our groceries at one place.) I snapped pictures while we were driving. You quickly drive from a nice clean area to trash and shanty looking huts and fields full of trash. The terrain is very hilly and a lot of the coast line had cliffs. The country is really beautiful. But you are constantly reminded of the devastation caused from the civil war.

Ola! Primera Blog de Nathan!

So life has been a little busy that few weeks. I cannot believe it has been a full month that we have been living in Luanda together. Here is a "top 10" for our first month, in no particular order:

- you find out truly how much you need and don't need when your air shipment is still sitting on the ground in Houston

- having 3 year olds argue in front of you about what they like has become one of my favorite things to watch. "I love batman!" "I love princesses" "I like the color blue" "I like pink"

- sleeping under a mosquito net is similar to being under a tent, but in the house!

- $15 for a loaf of sliced bread, that's just plain stupid!

- Chinese color crayons are the worst on the planet. All they do is break!

- a cup of coffee is still one of my favorite things in the morning

- never under estimate the power of sunscreen; use it! And the spray can does not work properly, just look at the continent of Africa I have on my back!

- appreciate the conveniences of home! Sometimes we have to go to 4 different grocery stores to get everything on our list!

- never has English speaking friends been more of a relief then nowadays. I spend most of my day butchering Portuguese, it is so nice to share a beer with people who can speak English!

- sitting under the shade of the Boabab tree comes second to a Live Oak, but it's still pretty cool!

- I am so happy to have my wife and kids here, I couldn't make it without them!!!

One month down and 2 to go until we are in Guadalajara for Ryan and Cindy's wedding. I cannot wait to hug my parents and share a shot of tequila with my brother as he experiences one of the most exciting memories of his life! It will be a much needed escape from Angola for the whole family!

Play Dough, Work outs, and Dress-Up

We try to stay busy at the Mery house. Picture collages has taken up a good potion of my time these days (as you can tell). Nathan has no problem with staying busy with work. It is crazy but good. He's really liking the everyday challenges that Angola brings. He is the best husband! Even after a super busy work week, he took on the kids alone Friday night so I could take a break. Another mom-friend and I ventured to Belas Shopping where the movie theater is. We saw 'This Means War' with Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy. The movie was awesome! It is definitely on my list to purchase when it comes out on DVD. Great rom-com plus action scenes.

Since our things from home haven't arrived... nor have they left Houston... I made the kids play dough. They LOVE it! We spent 2 1/2 hours playing the first day. And another hour the next. Loads of fun and it brings on their amazing imaginations.

Work outs are serious at the Mery house! The kids love grabbing Nathan's push-up bars and work out like Daddy. Riley was so cute grunting and getting on her tippy-toes. Even kicked her legs up a few times.

Owen is hard core! When he works out, he is all business. Pops his feet up on the back of the couch and starts the push-ups. Bring it biceps!

Of course after a good work out, it's dress-up time. Riley is really into putting on clothes no matter who's they are. She looked precious in Daddy's shirt. She didn't manage to get the shorts on, but she doesn't really have enough body for all that. She put Owen's pj shorts on after bath time. Quite the picture (even though I didn't snap one...), naked Riley with Owen's pj shorts around her tummy. How you ask? Well her WHOLE little body fits in ONE leg of his shorts. Ha!

So this picture is just too cute not to share! This is Nathan, a 3-year old pug my brother Cody adopted about a month ago. Isn't he adorable?!

Park Fun

We go to the park everyday. The kids love getting out of the house in the late afternoon when it's not as hot. Riley's favorite thing is the seesaw. She climbed on all by herself but had no one to play with. So sad!

A little later Owen climbed on and I helped them seesaw together. They love playing together! Here are more pictures of my cuties!

Owen encounter a mean little boy as we were leaving. I told Owen it was time to leave because we had to cook dinner. Owen sometimes, wait no, typically always prepares for battle when we have to transition from something he wants to do. The mean little boy started laughing and calling Owen a baby. Owen started yelling at me and huffing and puffing around the park, kicking dirty, fighting the tree. I could tell he was really upset. I wanted to clobber the mean little boy. But as he was probably 5, I thought I'd better not. Plus as much as you as a parent want to protect your kids from everything, nothing would ever happen to them. "Let's see how little Squirt does flying solo." (Thank you Disney's Finding Nemo for the helpful parenting tip.) However I could not help myself and asked the mean little boy to please talk nice. Then started walking home with Riley. Owen was very quick to follow. Half way home I asked Owen if the mean little boy hurt his feelings. (Note: I didn't call him that to Owen.) He said "Yea" really bummed out. Bless his heart! We talked a little more and it seemed to lift his spirits. Then had lots of fun at dinner and Pirate Veggie Tales!

A Wonderful Start to 29

Celebrating my 29th birthday was an adventure! Some of our new friends and one of Nathan's colleagues ventured to the island of Mussulu for the day. Immediately upon entering the parking lot to the port our car was surrounded with men. They all wanted to be paid to watch our car for the day. I thought our driver Aires was going to run them over! Haha! Fortunately he did not but he did roll down the window and tell them off in Portuguese. Nathan and our driver haggled prices with the guys running the boats and then we loaded up. Owen didn't want to get on but once we got going fast, he thought it was a load of fun!

We had the boat drivers take us to a calm, peaceful area. There was a good 75 yards to the next groups on both sides of us. Perfect for the kids to run around and us to relax. We didn't let the kids get too far into the water. 1. None of them are actual swimmers. 2. The current was quite strong and fast. 3. The jet skiers and boats got way too close to our swim area. But they had a blast nonetheless! We found tons of African sand dollars and shells. The sand dollars were really interesting and different from the ones we find in the Gulf of Mexico. They look almost identical except for one half has tentacle looking arms and the other half smooth. and of course sticks are swords! En guard!

Nathan bought the kids two sets of sand toys which proved to be a huge hit! Especially for Riley who sat and shoveled sand into the buckets for hours. Our new friends made me a cake which was delicious! Their last assignment landed them in the UK so both the girls have lovely accents. It is so fun listening to them talk. Adorable!

Nathan got me a yummy chocolate cake which the kids were more than happy to help eat it. They love blowing out candles so they helped with the too. Owen sang me Happy Birthday which was spectacular! Sweet Riley kept saying "Happy Day!" I'm very blessed to have my loving family with me on my birthday.

Overall a really wonderful way to celebrate the start of year 29. Birthdays can only get better and better when surrounded by my family and friends!
