Back in Africa

Finally the five Mery's are together in Africa. What a journey! Our sweet Maggie is 4 months old with stamps from Germany and Angola in her passport. I think that's amazing! So what's new other than my baby is a jet setter?
  • Nathan rocked the work-from-home dad AND stay-at-home dad for 3 weeks. Woohoo!
  • Riley is no longer wearing diapers! A big thank you to the M&M's who inspired her.
  • Owen is a rock star and growing up faster than I can believe.
  • Maggie flew on her first plane from Austin to Houston.... and then her first international flights... 9 hours and 8 hours. She also barfed in the Frankfurt airport. (God bless my kids... all 3 inherited my flimsy stomach.)
Maggie and I are getting adjusted to the time difference. Another few days and we should be all sorted as each day is a bit better. I couldn't be happier to be back with Owen and Riley! This was the first time we've been separated for so long. Happy days of togetherness!

Ciao!

Babies are such a nice way to start people. (Don Herold)

Navigating through all the baby products is overwhelming as a new parent. In 2008 Nathan and I wandered around the store trying to figure out what we needed for our first baby not knowing what we really needed. We emerged from the store 3 hours later exhausted and sure we missed important items.

When we registered for our third child, it was a much easier process. We already had a lot from the previous 2 kiddos. This time we felt more confident in the registering for the essentials and seeing through all the unneeded things.

Now in 2013, I have several beautiful friends becoming mommies for the first time. They have been amazing supporting me through three pregnancies and celebrating my children.

So to my friends… thank you from the bottom of my heart. Here is a list of my favorite baby products, ramblings and whatnot. Hopefully this will help y’all get started.

 Baby products I like...
  • Feetie pajamas! Zippers tend to be easier than snaps when you are changing diapers in the middle of the night. And they are so sweet on little baby feet.
  • Uppa Vista baby stroller with Graco car seat: There are only a few Graco car seats that work with the Uppa stroller adaptor. It has been very easy to steer, open & fold up, and get in & out of the car.
  • Bumbo chair and tray
  • Boppy pillow: a must for nursing, good to help the baby sit & do tummy time
  • Muslim swaddling blankets: Aden & Anais is my favorite brand.
  • Tommee Tippee bottles (get a few different ounce sizes and nipple flows)
  • MAMS pacifiers 100%!!! (They don't have a 'top' or 'bottom' so it doesn't matter which way the binka goes it. Plus the designs are the cutest.)
  • Diapers:
    • Pampers Swaddlers Diapers Newborn or Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive Newborn: Super soft for new baby skin and they have a sweet baby smell. These fit babies up to 8 lbs. and have a stripe indicating a soiled diaper. More important than you think!
    • Pampers Swaddlers and Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive also come in size 1 which fit babies up to 14lbs. Huggies Little Snugglers are also really great.
  • Sensitive wipies are the softest. I think generic brand wipes can be rougher in texture.
  • Baby soap: Aveeno Baby, Johnson&Johnson Lavendar
  • Baby Bjourn: our favorite way to wear a baby

My favorite post-delivery must have's...
  • Nursing wrap: I have one from Bebe au Lait. It has allowed me to nurse anywhere I am. I am 100% for feeling free and comfortable to nurse in public. As a mom, you have every right to feed your baby. So do what you feel comfortable and be confident that you are doing what is BEST for your baby.
  • Breast pads: Lansinoh. Don't even try another brand! These are the thinnest and have a double sticky to help keep them in place.
  • Nipple cream: Lansinoh. You really will need this and it really does help.
  • Always pads: long overnight at first, then the regular ones as needed
  • Boppy pillow: A big plus for post-delivery. If you have an episiotomy, you can use it to help sit for the first few days.
  • Nursing app on you iPhone - a must for keeping track of when you nursed and for how long. I'm using Baby Nursing which also tracks diapers, sleeping, pumping, etc. Don’t buy an expensive watch to keep track. Just download a timing app. SO much cheaper and they work great.
  • Nursing bras – Sleeping and daytime: My favorite ones are from A Pea in a Pod. My cousin Kim has raved about Bravado bras. The site also has some good information to read about nursing.
  • Medela Swing breast pump – this serviced 2 babies. It’s a single so working mommas might like a double to be more efficient with their time.  Pumping can give you relief from any engorgement while you and baby regulate supply and demand at the beginning. I currently have a Tommee Tippee pump. It works well but is louder than the Medela.

What you need at the hospital....
  • Your own pillow: Use during labor and after delivery. When you’re ready to deliver, you might not want it to be too close to the action.
  • Slippers, socks, bath robe
  • Nursing bra (if your milk comes in while you're still at the hospital, you'll want a bra and the breast pads!! Most women's milk doesn't come in that fast. But play it safe. Nothing worse than your boobs leaking and you're not prepared. Trust me!)
  • Breast pads, nipple cream
  • You can pack some Always pads but you don't really need to. The hospital will provide pads and some super-sexy, gauze-type, horrifically-awesome undies. Take any extra of the gauzies, pads, Dermaplast, ice packs, whatever you can get. This way you are stocked to get through the first days home.
  • A pair of big undies in case you don't want to wear the gauzies home.
  • Toiletries
  • Night gown/nursing top & pj pants: a good idea if you don’t want to wear the hospital gown after delivery.

What Dad should bring.... (I talked with Nathan about these so the list has input from a Daddy.)
  • Camera
  • Phone
  • Chargers & extra camera battery
  • iPad with movies and a DirectTV app (this proved to be awesome while we were in the hospital having Maggie)
  • Pajama pants/sleeping (the nurses tend to like clothed daddy’s – no sleeping in your undies!)
  • Slippers
  • Pillow & blanket
  • A change of clothes
  • Baby name book in case you’re not set on a name.
  • Snacks for himself & someone who you can call to bring food

What to bring for baby…
  • Car seat – installed (required by law - you canNOT take you baby home without one.)
  • Receiving blanket
  • Newborn pacifier
  • Going home outfit
  • Baby book or paper for guests to sign in. I love that I have the kids 1st visitors at the hospital written down. It was really special to me.
  • Also you might want to bring an extra piece of paper or a page from the baby book for handprints or footprints. The nursery nurses we had were super sweet and did prints on my paper.

*Take everything from the nursery bed the baby is in at the hospital… you already paid for it. The hospital nose suction ball is the best out there! Try to get 2 if you can.

Other stuff…
  • Most play mats are pretty much the same so just pick one that you like. Music and lights are fun for the baby. Owen liked them but the lights really ticked Riley off. It was hilarious! Maggie likes the mirror on hers.
  • A bouncer and a swing will be fun for the baby.
  • Pack N Plays and port-a-cribs are great for traveling. No matter where you go, you have a proper bed for the baby.

Things I haven’t tried but look cool…
  • Summer Infant Rest Assured Sleeper or the Baby Delight Snuggle Nest Surround – these look good until about 4 months… so a Pack N Play/port-a-crib is probably more worth the money
  • mamaRoo Infant Seat

The only thing you 100% have to do off my rambling list is bring a car seat to the hospital (state law and all…). Everything else is just from my viewpoint and opinions based on my experience with 3 kids. You might try out something I loved and hate it. And things my babies liked might not work for yours. But it's somewhere to start. We're all in this together.

Congratulations on entering Motherhood!
It is a blessing and the greatest adventure you’ll ever go on!

Ciao!

Coming to an end

The words 'coming to an end' can have several meanings and in this case I mean it in the best way. Our family is on week 13 of being separated by over 7,500 miles (and an ocean)....
in exactly 5 days 7 hours Nathan lands in Texas. Words can't describe how elated the kids and I are to have him back with us. We have all struggled with the time apart. I am very thankful for FaceTime which has allowed us all to stay connected.
We miss you Nathan! We love you!

Already 3 months

Somehow December has transformed into March and we no longer have an infant. Maggie-babes (as Riley has named her) is 3 months old.

Maggie, you are such a sweet happy baby. You are magical when it comes to sleeping through the night (which started around 8 weeks.... God bless you!). You are starting to giggle at your big brother and sister and when Mommy makes a silly face. You get very upset when you pull your binka out of your mouth. You are a snuggle-bug and I love it! Owen and Riley adore you. They love kissing you. Daddy has been gone since you were 12 days old, but he loves you very much! When we talk with him via FaceTime, you see him and respond to his voice. You are a blessing to our family and make our family complete. We love you Maggie!

Here's the download....

As my plethora of followers already know... I've been quite lax in my blogging the last several months. But if you know what's been going on... you'll understand. In the beginning of November, Janet helped me travel back to Texas with Owen and Riley and I was 31 weeks pregnant! Not an easy task! With 2 10+ hour flights plus a 2 1/2 hour drive to Austin, I was one exhausted pregnant momma!

A short 2 weeks after we returned to the States, Janet's father passed away. I am so thankful we were able to spend Veteran's Day with him the weekend prior to his passing. Nathan was able to come home a week early in order to attend the funeral. It was a beautiful military ceremony. PawPaw was surrounded by all the family and friends who loved him so dearly as we said goodbye.

The whirlwind continued as Thanksgiving came. Then we got closer to closing on our Austin home, Christmas and the birth of our 3rd child. Talk about the trifecta of huge events! 3 days after we closed, Santa came. Just 3 days after that, Nathan and I were at the hospital.

Friday, December 28th at 3:08PM we welcomed Maggie Ann into our life and our family. We adore her! She is a precious, sweet baby. O and Ri are constantly giving her love.

1 day old - wrapped in Gramma Esther's blanket, born on Gramma Esther's birthday
1 month old

2 months old

One more little item... I turned 30! My sweet family organized a surprised birthday party for me at a winery. We bottled birthday wine with a custom wine label. It was an amazing birthday filled with balloons, flowers, cake, cupcakes, cookies, presents, and most importantly family!

Eco Tur Angolan Adventure!

Last weekend Janet, Nathan, Owen, Riley and me (all 7 months pregnant me) adventured east into Angola with Eco Tur and 2 other families from our compound. It was quite an adventure!!!

1st Day: Luanda - N’dalatando – Kalandula
We left Luanda at 6AM following the main road east in the direction of N’dalatando (a new road from Zenza). We stopped for a coffee some 100kms in. The local kids came from the school to check us out. They were pretty interested by all of us. Then we continued on to N'dalatando, the capital of Kwanza Norte province where we visit the Botanical Gardens, and old agricultural college at Kilombo, refuel and had lunch. The Botanical Gardens were amazing! All the plants were so lush and huge! I wish we could go back in time to see the gardens and college at its prime. At the hotel for lunch, we saw about 10 beautiful, tall women competing in the Miss Kwanza Norte doing interviews and taking pictures. The winner will go on to Miss Angola and then to Miss Universe. Very cool! After lunch we loaded back in the Land Cruiser and traveled through Lucala, Cacuso and Lombe. We took a photo opportunity at the bridge over the Lucala River. We searched hard to see some crocodiles, but weren't successful. We loaded back in the cruiser to find that the gear box went out! The other cruiser towed us to the hotel where all 13 of us climbed aboard to make it the last little bit to our main objective - the majestic Kalandula Falls on the Lucala River, (a rival to Victoria Falls in height, the second largest in Africa, locally known as Quedas de Calandula). The falls were amazing! Janet and I were quite worried we were going to lose a kid over the falls, but we successful in keeping them out of the river and safe from the edge. Nathan and Owen did adventure around on all the rocks. Climbing on the rocks was Owen's favorite thing we did all weekend. Can't say I blame him. After visiting the falls we headed to our small basic hotel in Kalandula. Very basic indeed and it felt a lot like camping. Owen really dug the bunk beds!

2nd Day: Kalandula Pedras Negras - Luanda
After breakfast we said fairwell to our tour guide Carlos and climbed aboard a minivan Eco Tur hired for us to complete our adventure. We visited a rather surprising church in Kalandula village where Owen got to try goat wrangling with one of the local goats. He was uninterested in being near Owen thankfully since he had some nice little horns on him. Then we set off for Pedras Negras, day 2's main objective. At Cacuso we turned south where we reached the fascinating rock formation known as Pungo Andongo (Pedras Negras). We picnicked and climbed one of the main rocks for a spectacular view of the surrounding country side including Capanda Dam and saw the famous “rock footprint” of Rainha Ginga, the African Queen. Our picnic included an audience of the local kids. Our tour guide gave them a bunch of food afterwards. Then we headed for back for Luanda with one stop for a photo at the Kwanza River. Almost all the roads were paved on the main part of the trip except for a very difficult 20 km of very rough road. Concerns for our minivan skyrocketed as we were rocked all over the van and the windows and doors shook a bit more than we liked. The minivan was not designed for off-roading! Or a pregnant woman onboard during the off-roading! The minute we hit the rough road, Riley completely turned off and passed out on Nathan. It was hilarious. Here we are trying not to get whiplash and praying the van doesn't break down and Riley is drooling in the backseat sound asleep. We finally made it back to Talatona. We were all exhausted. After showers and dinner, we all went straight to bed.

Our adventure into Angola showed us more than just the beauty of the Angola nature. We traveled through many villages where we saw small mud huts and thatched roofs, children running around barely dressed, villagers selling homemade charcoal or whatever animal they caught (saw a few monkeys this way), and the farming they do to live. It is very humbling and made our "basic" accommodations in Kalandula look 5-star as the rain storm pounding our tin roof keeping us dry. Being an American experiencing Africa has brought a new perspective of thankfulness, humbleness, and appreciation for how I was raised and all the blessings in my life.

Now for the pictures!!
